Have you ever wondered about the difference barbecuing in a barbecue pit makes? The barbecue pits is one the earliest slow cooking method for cooking meat. It was originally intended for a whole pork barbeque, but a barbecue pit can be used to slow cook beef or chicken.
The barbecue pit differs from conventional grilling methods in that it slow cooks and smokes the meat to make it tender and tasty. In today�s world, there are many alternatives to the traditional barbeque pit, but a meal prepared in a real barbeque pit is something to be relished.
The main idea of a barbecue pit is to make an oven in the ground. Fill the barbecue pit with dry wood to make a bed of hot coals. Wet wood is used in the barbecue pit to add a smoky flavor while the meat is cooking. The barbecue pit is covered while cooking, so the smoke and heat are concentrated. The meat cooks tender and delicious. The process of cooking in a barbecue pit takes about 8 to 10 hours, so you will want to start in the morning, or even the night before you plan t have your barbecue pit party.
If your plan is to barbecue a whole or halved cow or a pig, it is necessary to dig a barbeque pit wide enough to accommodate the size of the meat to be barbecued. Your basic barbecue pit is three feet square, and that includes the depth. You will need something to cover the barbecue pit as well. A piece of plywood or tin should do the trick.
To begin your barbecue pit experience, fill the hole about � of the way full with dry hickory chunks and light them up. This makes a bed of coals about 1 � feet thick. It takes about two hours for it to get really going, so you will have time to get the ribs, briskets, roasts or whatever you have decided to cook, ready.
Before putting your meat into the barbecue pit, after you are finished preparing it, wrap each piece of meat tightly in brown paper and then wrap in at least two layers of wet newspapers.
When you see a hot bed of coals in your barbecue pit, it is time to take a shovel and level the coals into an even layer for your cooking surface. Now you will add wet hickory, aspen, apple, or another type of smoking wood, and layer it loosely on top of the hot bed of coals in the barbecue pit. This makes a barrier between the coals and creates a smoky flavor for the barbecue while it cooks.
Place the lid on top and cover it with the dirt you dug to make the barbecue pit. Ensure no smoke is escaping from the barbecue pit, sit back, and relax while you are waiting for this delicious feast to cook. Make sure that you leave the barbecue sealed for at least 6 to 8 hours. Because the barbecue is self-contained, you don�t have to worry about your meat drying out.
When you are ready to open the barbecue pit and eat, you will want to get rid of the dirt that you sealed the pit with so you can remove the lid. Work quickly to remove the meat from the barbecue pit. When you are ready to unwrap the meat, the paper wrapper should still be wet and the meat inside will be warm and juicy. A barbecue pit is worth trying, after your first taste you will be hooked for life.

People who wish they can just take a �magical pill� and all their health problems will be solved seem to think so. Companies that spend billions of dollars producing supplements make you believe that you do. Yes, some companies do make supplements that are better absorbed by the body then others, but the question is: do you REALLY NEED a supplement?
Think about it this way: our bodies can get their nutrients from the foods that we eat. In fact, if we start taking supplements we might wrongly think we are healthy enough that we don�t need to eat properly. Also, the nutrients that we take in from these supplements might actually interfere in the absorption of other vitamins and minerals. For example �zinc hinders copper and calcium absorption, iron hinders zinc absorption, calcium hinders iron absorption�� (from �Nutrition Concepts and Controversies� by Frances Sizer and E. Whitney). Besides, many times we can overdose on vitamins and minerals if we take a supplement and that can cause many health problems.
Overdosing on vitamins and minerals in pretty common, unfortunately, and people don�t even realize it. One report from the Center of Disease Control estimated nutrient overdoses in 1990 at more than 1300, and people are taking more supplements today then they did then! Many people prescribe themselves all different sorts of supplements and they really think they are doing it for their health. Unfortunately, they might be causing themselves more harm than good.
It is best to get your vitamins and minerals, as well as other nutrients, directly from the foods we eat. We need to learn to eat a balanced diet made up of lots of veggies, fruits, whole grains, proteins and a small amount of fat, while reducing the amount of refined sugar we take in. We need to eat a variety of different colored fruits and veggies, including berries that are high in antioxidants. The protein we take in should come from lean meats, poultry or fish, as well as legumes and yogurt.
There ARE some people that MAY need to take supplements. The book �Nutrition Controversies and Concepts� by F. Sizer tells us what groups of people do:
-Pregnant women (may need iron)
-Newborns (may need a doses of vitamin K
-Infants
-Those who are lactose intolerant (may need extra calcium)
-Habitual dieters (since they might not eat sufficient amounts of food)
-Elderly people who have trouble chewing
-Those with various diseases like AIDS, cancer, etc.
-Drug and alcohol addicts
-Those recovering from surgery, burns, injury and illness
-Strict vegetarians (may need B12, D, iron and zinc)
In conclusion, if you don�t fit in any of the categories mentioned above, don�t take a supplement unless your doctor recommends that you do. It is important that you eat a proper diet that includes lots of fruits and veggies, whole grains, protein, fiber and a small amount of fat. If you do need to take a supplement, decide what type you would like to take � chewable, liquid or pill. Remember, if you take a chewable one and it has vitamin C, make sure you chew it quickly and then rinse your mouth out with water since vitamin C on your teeth for a long period of time may erode your teeth. Also, make sure that the amounts listed on the bottle are below or the same as the RDA. When it comes to nutrients, including vitamins and minerals, more is NOT necessarily better!

When I think back on my childhood, I don't have any memories of my parents hosting a party other than the occasional holiday. I don't even remember them having any friends over for dinner. In my adult life, I have come to learn that the idea of playing hostess is very stressful for my mother. I have also learned that she is not alone in feeling this way.
When I got married and set up my own home, I found that I enjoyed entertaining friends and family, but with no motherly advice to work with, I didn't have a clue whether or not I was "doing it right." What I figured out through trial and error is that there really is no right or wrong way to entertain, but there are a few things I have learned that can turn entertaining from a stress-inducing nightmare into an enjoyable event.
The single most important thing I have learned is that the comfort of your guests is key. At a party, the guests take their cues from the host or hostess. If the host is frantic and obviously stressed, you can bet that their guests will not feel comfortable. Therefore, you must remain calm, cool and collected in order to make your guests feel at ease. How can you do that and still attend to all of the necessary details? The answer is prior planning. Here is how you can plan the perfect party every time. The first step is to plan the type of party you would like to have: Do you want a cocktail party or a dinner party? Do you want the meal to be formal or casual? Will the food be served at the table or will you offer a buffet? The answers to these types of questions will help you determine the number of people to invite, as well as who those people should be. For example, you wouldn't want to invite acquaintances that do not get along well if the party will be more intimate and there will not be many other people there for them to interact with. The answers to these questions will also help you decide upon the menu later. Start a party journal and write the answers to these questions in it.
The next step is to plan the guest list. Invitations should be mailed approximately three weeks prior to the date of the party. Write down the names of all invitees in your party journal, leaving a space for their RSVP. This way you will know at a glance how many guests you are expecting. Choose your RSVP deadline carefully, making sure to allow enough time to properly plan the menu. Keep in mind that many people overlook RSVP deadlines. If your deadline passes and there are people you have not heard from, consider your situation in deciding what to do. If your party is a more casual open-house type event, simply plan for everyone to attend to make sure you have enough for all who show up. However, if your party is a more formal affair and you need to know how many places to set at the table, you may want to consider following up with a telephone call. If you choose to call, keep the conversation casual and upbeat. Do not offend your guests by pointing out that they missed the deadline to respond. Simply try to ascertain the answer to your question through casual conversation.
Once you know how many guests you are expecting, the next thing you want to do is plan the menu. When planning the menu, try to choose as many dishes that can be prepared ahead of time as possible. Choose dishes that fit well with the theme of your party. If you are having a cocktail party you will only need appetizers and you will want to choose foods that do not require a plate or utensils to eat. This will allow your guests the ability to mingle easily without trying to juggle a plate in one hand and a drink in the other. If you are offering a sit down meal you may opt for more elegant dishes. Keep in mind that you can still achieve elegance without spending days in the kitchen. Many of these dishes can be prepared in advance and some are actually better that way. Write down your menu selections in your party journal and make note of any preparation instructions that will help you determine when to get started on each dish.
Now that you have your menu established you can start planning the set up for the party. Will you need to set the table and, if so, for how many? Which tablecloth, napkins, dishes and centerpiece would you like to use? Do you need to purchase disposable cocktail plates and napkins? Write all of this information in your journal so that all of the thinking is done ahead of time.
The final step is the party calendar. Start one week prior to the event and write down any tasks that can be accomplished each day leading up to the day of the event. The idea is to leave as little as possible for the day of the party, allowing yourself time to relax, get dressed and get excited for your guests to arrive without running around trying to get everything done at the last minute. The calendar should include things such as shopping for paper goods and decorations, grocery shopping, house cleaning, setting the table, and menu preparations. If you do a little bit each day you will be ready for your party before you know it.
All of this planning and list making may seem like a lot of work, but once you realize how much fun it can be to actually attend your own parties, rather than slaving away in the kitchen while all of your guests are enjoying themselves you will never throw a party any other way.
